What is Mercury Retrograde?

I get this question a lot. It drops like an annoying catchphrase and gets passed around and blamed for just about everything.
Like industry standard keywords words often do, a phrase sticks and eventually has such meaning that it becomes a norm but do we REALLY understand it?
Common terms used in the spiritual community have gained popularity and tend to have a mind of their own and lose the original reference and context:
- Attachment
- For your greater good
- Soul mate
- Twin Flame
- Manifestation
- 3D/5D
- Ascension,
- and the list goes on)
Mercury Retrograde: Let’s get into it!
Any Google search will tell you the dates and times of the year Mercury goes “direct” for us and give a little scientific jargon. But essentially, once every 4 months or so, Mercury appears to move in the opposite direction of Earth. Slower moving Mercury gives the illusion of moving in retrograde or away. Unlike a moon phase (full moon being roughly 3 days) Mercury moves slower, so the “phase” of influence is approximately three weeks give or take shadow periods.
So get good and comfortable with Mercury energy when you hear it coming around. But what is true is, we have been flowing with the cycle of Mercury our entire lives and it is nothing to get wound up about.
It is best to look at Mercury Retrograde as KEY THEMES.
Relationship Mercury Rx:
The general consensus is that Mercury Retrograde is when Exes come back around.
It’s true! They do.
Also, this is a devastating “season” for breakups because you’ll see those old solid couples of 20-plus years suddenly calling it quits. I always say Mercury is where the rubber meets the road. If you are dissatisfied, you will find yourself restless. This is why I call retrogrades the Great Revealer. It exposes layers underneath that we are ignorant of or choose not to look at.
Mercury retrograde can bring up a sense of nostalgia. You will find yourself missing someone, or that it is them missing you.
If you haven’t heard from your ex, are YOU the one who reached out? Sometimes it be like that, LOL.
I always say that this season is all about awareness. The planet Mercury is all about communication, after all. If an old paradigm comes churning up out of the past, we have two choices:
Either Heal it, or Kill it.
And I am figuratively speaking, thank you very much. What I am trying to say here is to heal the wound or kill off the connection. We have an opportunity to heal fractals of the past and to reconcile broken connections through the open heart and forgiveness. If it is impossible to do so, this is where we cut off all contact. It’s that simple, yet the complexities of relationships tell us different.
The Digital Upset:
Electronics are said to take a crash at this time and includes miscommunications of ALL kinds.
Your computer is NOT your friend during Mercury Retrograde. Neither is your tablet, or phone nor is any data to be trusted. Typos and the “oops I forgot to hit send” texts are like a plague. This includes signing contracts. This doesn’t mean No house or car buying, it just insists on due diligence. Read the fine print, take your time, and never rush. This is the time to take things slowly.
THEME: Miscommunication!
The major theme of Mercury retrograde is miscommunication. Even the most simple of requests or statements get turned around, so don’t be afraid to ask twice. This also indicates it is a good practice to follow up on dates and appointments, double-check texts and attachments, and be clear and simple about the way you communicate.
Expect Travel Delays:
Because Mercury is so closely associated with the themes of communication, it is important to note that it includes all forms of electronics. Travel is also a form of COMM-unity and a form of information and communication and affects the by ways and highways. This means air traffic controllers, radio and satellite transmissions, texts, emails, saving and deleting files, backups and more. Slow down and work carefully and you should be fine.
It is important also to note that this includes ATMs and bank transactions such as transfers and payments. Take your time next time you venmo during the retrogrades. Double check and confirm.
I like to keep things simple. You have plenty of astrologers to inform you of the particular flavor of the upcoming mercury retrograde. Each has its own flow and particular partnerships and aspects that influence the difference. This includes houses, rulerships and planetary influences.
I am essentially saying that no two are equal, however the main themes above tend to be UNIVERSAL.
What you can do to ease the effects of Mercury Retrograde:
Some things to think about for this Retrograde season:
- Take your time!
- Keep it simple
- Communicate clearly and concisely. No time for story telling.
- Plan for extra time during travel, carry extra cash, a charged phone and have a backup plan!
- CAREFULLY sign contracts. This does not mean DON’T sign contracts. It means do so carefully and conscientiously. All is well.
- Be gentle with one another. If this Mercury Rx is not affecting YOU it may be affecting the energy of someone you love. This is where we offer a little Grace. Children, especially, can become restless and hyper.
- Reserve the big talks until you are fully ready to take the dive. There is a tendency for conversations to get deep, which van be a GREAT thing.
